Endocrinology
Our Children’s Endocrinology service serves a wide geographic area in east London. We see children up to 16 years old in our paediatric clinic at The Royal London, and from 16 to early adulthood in our transition clinic at St Bartholomew's.
The consultants also provide an outreach service to five District General Hospitals in the North East Thames region (Welwyn Garden City, Chelmsford, Whipps Cross, Basildon and Newham). Our centre also receives a number of National and International referrals for a number of disorders.
We offer treatment and care for children and young people with a range of endocrine diseases (hormone disorders) including:
- Disorders of growth (specialist clinics)
- Disorders of puberty (delayed and advanced)
- Thyroid disorders
- Pituitary disorders
- Adrenal disorders (specialist clinics)
- Cushing’s syndrome (specialist clinics)
- Disorders of genital development (differences of sexual development; DSD) (specialist clinic)
- Parathyroid disorders
- Calcium and bone disorders (specialist clinics)
- Multiple Endocrine neoplasia syndromes (MEN) (family clinics)
- Von Hippel Lindau syndrome (VHL) (family clinics)
- Paraganglioma syndromes (succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) mutations) (family clinics)
- Glucose disorders (hypoglycaemia/hyperninsulinism)
- Disorders of water and salt balance
We also treat patients with a number of syndromes which require endocrine care e.g. Turner, Noonan, Silver-Russell, Beckwith-Wiedemann, CHARGE and Prader-Willi (specialist clinic). We also run a joint clinic with the paediatric haematology team.
We run a multi-discplianry clinic for complex children hypoglycaemia, adrenal disorders, pituitaryand calcium and bones disorders.
We have strong academic interests and our department is closely linked to the Centre for Endocrinology at the William Harvey Research Institute (WHRI) – see the research section below.
We also have extremely close links with the adult endocrinology department.
Our joint clinical activities allow the seamless transition of patients from paediatric to adult care. These include:
- Transition clinics
- Family clinics for endocrine tumour syndromes (see above)
- Multidisciplinary team meetings
