June 2019 Update from the Youth Empowerment Squad

Pollution, Redevelopment and Article 12

30 June, 2019 from 1-3pm

This was the first Youth Empowerment Squad (YES) meeting in the Adolescent Room after the grand opening on the 3rd of May 2019. The meeting consisted of a discussion and review of the standard operating procedures of the new adolescent room and how it can be used for adolescents and young people at Royal London Hospital.

Additionally, at the meeting, YES members were afforded an opportunity to be involved in the redevelopment of Whipps Cross. Feedback was given to the Community Engagement Lead and the discussions will continue at future meetings as the plans for Whipps Cross evolve.

YES attendees also participated in an eye-opening learning experience regarding  Indoor Air Pollution from Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health & US (RCPCH &US) and how it can effect everyone’s daily lives. The discussion made members more informed before the Challenge Day at the RCPCH on the 13th of July. At this meeting, attendees will contribute to the wider discussion about how young people are affected by indoor air pollution.

Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) was discussed and a plan was made for how YES will lead on the Trust celebration of  the 30th anniversary of UNCRC in November 2019.

Finally, two YES members agreed to represent our Youth Forum and attend a mobile film making workshop with other members of the Great Ormond Street Youth Forum. This workshop will allow members to not only  learn a lifelong transferrable skill but also be part of a cross trust youth engagement.
