Media statement from Barts Health regarding our care of Tafida Raqeeb at The Royal London Hospital

Barts Health NHS Trust said:
‘This is a sad situation, in which our teams continue to work very closely with the family to include them and offer our support.

‘Our expert clinicians caring for Tafida consider, in discussion with additional medical experts from specialist centres outside of the Trust, that further medical treatment would not improve her condition and would not be in her best interests.

‘We recognise how difficult this is for all involved and, in accordance with national guidance from the General Medical Council in complex cases, are seeking the expert opinion of the High Court to ensure the Trust and the family provide the most appropriate care.’

Notes to Editor
Upon review of Tafida’s medical records including brain imaging, four medical experts in Italy have unanimously advised that they are unaware of any treatment that is available to improve her condition.

Guidance from the General Medical Council, which states that doctors should always act in the best interests of children and young people, acknowledges that the law relating to their treatment is complex. It is therefore recommended that doctors ‘should seek the advice of experienced colleagues, named or designated doctors for child protection, or professional or regulatory bodies’. Barts Health NHS Trust is therefore seeking the opinion of the High Court in relation to this case https://www.gmc-uk.org/outcomes-legislation
